Provide information on "how to use this site" (the wiki and other areas of the site)
It's obvious to you, but some new users may benefit from some quick help information. If your wiki software includes help pages, check that these are relevant to your installation. Amend the information where necessary or create additional information about your specific site. Help pages are often part of the wiki themselves. Creating such pages is a early step after installing a wiki. Part of the process of Seed it with content
We have page here called How to use this wiki
Mediawiki org provides help pages at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Contents
These are released to the public domain, and designed to be copied into new wiki installations.

It would seem like this one could be fleshed out quite a bit more. This is pretty important for most Wikis, especially for places where people are going to need to be able to get up and going quickly.
I'm trying to write a simple, How to..' on wiki for users of retirement age, some of whom may even be new to computers. I would have thought, in fact hoped, there would be a simple, step by step guide for beginners here but so far I've found nothing. Some of the pieces are written in commerce-speak, contain management jargon which is quite specific to individual fields and a foreign language to older users.
So perhaps someone wth a good working knowledge of wiki could give us a hand here, bearing in mind that a lot of us need to be told the basics.
Have you seen this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dnL00TdmLY&feature=user on the real basics of a wiki.
"fleshed out quite a bit"? That was kind of an understatement. I just wrote some content on this page. Before there was nothing but a link!
